Escarp Adventures is the business name of a venue offering some of the best inland hiking trails in South Africa, as well as fishing for bass, carp, trout, and yellowfish. We also feature a SAHPA-registered paragliding launch site and horse riding.
Accommodation options include the sophisticated Kruger House Lodge, Kudu Cottage, Tarentaal Chalet, and four unique yet very comfortable hikers’ camps. The common thread among all is how clean and cozy they are.
Here’s a bit more detailed information:
The High 5 Hiking Trail is situated on the Skurweberg, part of the Drakensberg escarpment between Machadodorp and Badplaas. Depending on your starting point, it’s a comfortable 2.5 to 3.5-hour drive from Gauteng.
The trails are well-marked, and with our professionally-made map, hikers should have no trouble finding their way. However, if needed, we can arrange professional, registered mountain guides—both male and female—who know the area inside and out.
There are four hikers’ camps linked by a network of over 60 kilometers of diverse trails:
- Pongola Express Railway Coach Camp: Featuring a beautifully preserved 1911 railway sleeper and dining coach.
- Aloe Kaya Camp: Famous for its “Loo with a View” and open-air canyon showers.
- Mt Komati Camp: A more sophisticated stone-under-thatch camp situated right on the banks of the Komati River.
- Candlewood Camp: Overlooking the Uitkomst waterfall, also known as the legendary Bride’s Leap waterfall, the second tallest in Mpumalanga!
Hiking trails of 2 to 6 nights/days can be arranged (day hikes available by special arrangement only).
The following self-guided hikes on well-maintained trails are available:
- 2-day circular loop trails.
- 2 to 6-day backpacking trails running between the camps, depending on the duration of your stay and the group’s needs and abilities.
- Optional slackpack service for those who prefer to transport their gear to the next overnight camp.
